    Excellent teaching. But when adjectives are added e.g. der große, frische, grüne Spargel is there a rule to determine their order? Could they be in a different order?

    Hi Laura Your lessons are fantastic. I’m now 52, living in Australia, and trying to revitalise the German I learnt in high school. This has been prompted by a first ever trip to Germany late this year. I thought I could skim over grammar and all the little details but now I see the importance. Hii Laura!! I just love your video simple yet effective..I have a question identify cases in following sentence The student gives the teacher whom he admires an apple ; here student is nominative apple accusative teacher dative, then what case whom belongs to?

    • @GermanwithLaura
      @GermanwithLaura 5 днів тому

      This is a deeper grammar discussion to be sure but here’s the short answer. Der Schüler (nominative) schenkt dem Lehrer (dative), den er bewundert, einen Apfel (accusative). The ‘den er bewundert’ is a relative clause that has its own sentence structure. Er is nominative, bewundert the conjugated verb, and den is an accusative pronoun that is replacing the noun Lehrer in the clause. Hope this helps!

I lived in a German speaking region and built up a decent vocabulary / understanding with Duolingo, but as you said it's kind of in a box. Great, GREAT video. You just got a new subscriber. I've studied German off and on for DECADES and have had to speak it a great deal in my work (opera singer - singing many operas, arias, and lieder in German, so needing to understand what I've been saying. I've also performed a bit in Germany, so had to be able to communicate with my colleagues as well.) But all the business about the changes for nominative, dative, genitive, and accusative cases has left me completely flummoxed, and limping to get to the next level of understanding. I have felt so stupid that I haven't been able to get beyond that. I'll be visiting Germany in a few months and have decided to use your videos to prep for that trip by helping me get over this hurdle that I never thought I'd conquer. Thank you so very much for making this content available here. PS: I'm also a teacher (not of languages, but of singing and acting) and I know how important it is to break down things *just so*, so that information can be digested as easily, painlessly, and efficiently as possible, and I'm painfully aware of how many "teachers" don't actually understand how to--or don't bother taking the time to--really break something down for the learner. You are clearly doing it, and are clearly a *real* teacher. Thank you again. ❤❤
